Sergio Henao, nicknamed "El venao" (The deer) is one of Colombias brightest talents. Born in the year that probably the most succesful Colombian rider Lucho Herrera won the Vuelta Espana. Sergio has all the characteristics to show that he may follow in Herrara's footsteps.
Born in the mountainous region of Antioquia, he is naturally a climber.
in 2005 he won two stages of the Junior Vuelta del Porvenir, and finished second overall behind Sky rider and compatriot Rigoberto Uran. He also finished 2nd in the Vuelta de Venezuela for juniors. Throughout 2006 he picked up numerous GC podiums and won the Clasic Norte de Santander. For 2007 the joined the Colombia es Passion team and started to ride outside of his native South America.
15th Overall in the Vuelta a la Cominidad de Madrid, 2 stages of the Venezuelan Clasico Banfoandes and a 2nd overall in the Norte de Sandander followed. Still just 20 years old he then finished 3rd in the GC of his home race the Vuelta a Antioguia and 3rd in the Colombian U23 TT Championship.
In 2008 he won the GC of the U23 Vuelta a Colombia, picking up two stages along the way, and just two years later in 2010 he won the elite Veulta a Colombia winning two stages in the process. Winning the race at just 23 immediately made him a hero in Columbia.
In 2011, in one of his last races before moving to Europe, he won the opening prologue of the Tour of Utah, and then extended his lead on the first stage when he was involved in a five man break with riders including Tour de Suisse winner Levi Leipheimer.
In 2012 he makes his European professional debut, joining compatriot and friend Rigoberto Uran on the Sky team after signing a two year contract.
